Industry + Art with designer Ian Stallings

Industry + Art

Thursday, May 14, 2026 · J Schatz Studio · Warren, MI

On Thursday, May 14, the studio opens its doors for an evening with designer Ian Stallings — a presentation, a Q&A, and the kind of long, unhurried conversation about industry and art that doesn't quite fit inside a trade show or a gallery opening.

The evening is hosted alongside ASID Michigan, Cambria, and ISFAD, and built around dialogue. Ian will speak about his Detroit-made design practice — sculptural, tactile, and resistant to the standard categories — followed by an open exchange with the room. Expect questions to outnumber answers, and for some of them to be the better for it.

The studio is the right setting for it. Originally a mid-century modern library, the building has been reshaped around the requirements of ceramic work: kilns, wheels, slab tables, finished shelves, and the quieter machinery of a working studio. The architecture remains, but the use has shifted. Jim Schatz, the studio's founder, will be on hand alongside the resident artists currently working out of the space. There will be pieces in progress, finished work staged for viewing, and a few things on the shelves that haven't yet been shown anywhere.

The format is intentionally relaxed. Refreshments. Conversation. A chance to meet the artists, walk the floor, and ask the questions that don't get asked when there's a podium between the speaker and the room.

We hope you'll join us.
