Reimagining a Classic: Introducing the New Acrylic Base for Our Figure 8 Table Lamps

At J Schatz, evolution is part of the making. We revisit our forms, refine them, and let new materials bring familiar shapes into a brighter light. This year, we turned our attention to one of our most loved designs — the Figure 8 Table Lamp — and asked a simple question: How can we make it feel even lighter, more modern, and more true to its sculptural essence?

Until now, the lamp sat on a hand-crafted ceramic base. Beautiful, grounded, and warm — but also visually weighty. As our Detroit studio explored new ways to elevate the form, we began experimenting with clear acrylic. The moment we placed the stoneware Figure 8 on the transparent block, the lamp transformed. The loops appeared to float. The silhouette sharpened. The entire piece gained a quiet, refined presence we couldn’t ignore.

The decision was made: the Figure 8 Lamp deserved this evolution.

Each base is precision-cut acrylic, polished to clarity, creating a clean visual lift that lets the ceramic speak without interruption. The shift from ceramic to acrylic doesn’t replace the soul of the piece — it enhances it. By removing weight, it reveals intention. By adding transparency, it invites light. And by pairing our handcrafted stoneware with a modern material, the lamp becomes even more architectural and timeless.

This reimagined edition is now available as a pair, offering a balanced, glowing presence in any space. A small change with a big effect — and a reminder that even the pieces we know best continue to surprise us when we let them evolve.
