We Found A New Home For Our Studio!

We moved to Detroit a couple months ago after being inspired on a trip here last September. We have been looking for a thriving art scene in a vibrant city for many years and are lucky to find our selves here. Finding the perfect spot took us longer than anticipated but we have exciting news. Our new studio is under contract and we will begin setting up shop next week and resuming all studio operations in mid-May.

The search for our studio was rocky, until we found the perfect spot a few weeks ago. The building at 22005 Van Dyke Ave. speaks to us with its midcentury design and open landscape. It was the former Warren Town Library. We hope to build a garden that everyone will enjoy and honor the history of the building as a place that the community can be proud of. A history that is grounded in learning, sharing, and giving back.

Our idea for the building is to make it our studio and incorporate other makers and artists into our plan. We learned that you can be anywhere in Detroit metro within 20 minutes so we hope to create this reality on Van Dyke and make it another stop on the art/design scene in metro Detroit. Peter has designed many homes and artists spaces and will lead the effort to create artist spaces and do the master plan for the community. In addition to J Schatz Studio, the property will also be the home of Peter Souza Jr's Studio, Peter Detroit Design, and eventually other artists. We have big plans and you can learn more about them at Studios Van Dyke.

Studios Van Dyke will not only provide a space for our artistic exploration but we plan to also host events for the community. We hope to connect with local community organizations like the Rising Stars Foundation whose cafe Gather + Grounds is right down the street.

As an organization that values the importance of repurposing spaces for the betterment of the community, we are eager to ensure that this building continues to serve a meaningful role in Warren. Our vision for the building reflects a strong commitment to preserving the integrity of the property while transforming it into a space that enhances the cultural landscape of the city. As we like to say around the studio, the world of J Schatz is driven by love, a sense of wonder, and the desire to solve problems with innovative design. We hope to bring that energy and spirit with us to our new home.

Thank you for your patience during this transition. We look forward to resuming studio operations in mid-May and bringing our vision to life at 22005 Van Dyke Ave.
