Radical Presence

April – May 2026

Radical Presence is a body of seven new works by J Schatz, on view at Take Me Home, Detroit, through May 2026. The pieces move between scales and registers — totems, vessels, suspended forms — and share a concern with what objects do when they refuse to be quiet.

The work in this show was made through repetition, accumulation, and surface. Material transformation is the throughline: clay shifted into states it doesn't naturally hold, glaze treated as a medium for color and weather, gesture preserved in fired form. Underneath the formal vocabulary is a body of work about queer embodiment — bodies that take up space, surfaces that hold their own histories, presence as a kind of insistence.
