Radical Presence: J Schatz Studio Launches Take Me Home During NCECA 2026
Exhibition at the Cadillac Arts Centre, Courtyard Installation at The Shepherd, and Open Studio in Warren
Detroit, Michigan — March 4, 2026
During the 60th annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), Detroit-based J Schatz Studio will present a series of exhibitions and public programs across three locations in the Detroit area.
At the center of the program is Radical Presence, the inaugural exhibition at Take Me Home, a new gallery and design space founded by artists Jim Schatz and Peter Souza Jr. Located within the Cadillac Arts Centre in Detroit’s Little Village neighborhood, the exhibition introduces a new body of work exploring the dialogue between clay, wood, and light.
The exhibition features sculptural ceramic lighting, collectible objects, and a new series of Clay + Wood Totems created collaboratively by Schatz and Souza. Rooted in decades of studio practice, the works explore balance, presence, and embodied making. The installation transforms the gallery into a hybrid environment that blurs the boundary between exhibition space and domestic interior.
Radical Presence marks the beginning of the Take Me Home exhibition program, positioning the space as a platform for collectible design, contemporary craft, and experimental work in clay.
Courtyard Installation at The Shepherd
In conjunction with the exhibition, J Schatz Studio will present a seasonal outdoor installation of ceramic bird houses in the courtyard of The Shepherd.
The installation features twelve Egg Bird Houses in graphite lava, metallic black, and bronze finishes suspended among the trees and landscape of the historic site. Timed to coincide with early spring migration, the installation reflects the studio’s long-standing exploration of birds as a recurring motif—forms designed as small architectures for nesting, shelter, and return.
For more than two decades, J Schatz Studio’s ceramic bird houses and feeders have appeared in gardens around the world, conceived as sculptural objects that support living ecosystems.
Open Studio at J Schatz Studio
Visitors attending NCECA are also invited to visit the working studio of J Schatz Studio in nearby Warren, Michigan.
The open studio offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the studio’s handmade ceramic lighting, bird feeders, nightlights, and sculptural objects. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the environment where the work is conceived, formed, and glazed, and to see works currently in production.
For over twenty years, J Schatz Studio has produced handmade ceramic lighting and objects that integrate sculpture, architecture, and everyday life.
