J Schatz Relocates to Detroit and Announces the Grand Opening of Studios Van Dyke
Detroit, MI – September 23, 2025 – J Schatz is excited to announce the relocation of its renowned ceramic design studio to Detroit, Michigan, and the official grand opening of Studios Van Dyke, a new creative hub for artists and makers.
The milestone will be celebrated with an Open House on Thursday, October 2, from 4–7 PM at Studios Van Dyke, featuring live music, wine, and tours of the newly renovated creative space.
Founded in 2004 by designer Jim Schatz, J Schatz is known for its colorful ceramic lighting, sculptural vessels, and imaginative design objects. In collaboration with designer Peter Souza Jr., the studio continues to push boundaries with work that is bold, tactile, and deeply human.
Over the past two decades, J Schatz has called New York, Los Angeles, Providence RI, Boothbay Harbor ME, and New Haven CT home — each city shaping the studio’s practice and expanding its reach. The move to Detroit marks the beginning of a new chapter, establishing J Schatz Studio as an anchor tenant at Studios Van Dyke.
“Detroit is a city of makers, and we’re thrilled to be part of that energy,” says Schatz. “Studios Van Dyke is both our new home and a space for other artists to create, collaborate, and thrive.”
The building features multiple creative studios, with two studios currently available for lease, offering artists and designers a chance to join this dynamic community.
