J Schatz Unveils Lion’s Roar, Lover’s Whisper at Season Fair Special Projects, Detroit 2025
Detroit, MI — September 24, 2025 — J Schatz announces the debut of Lion’s Roar, Lover’s Whisper, a site-specific installation of 100 hand-formed stoneware tiles created by artist Jim Schatz. Premiering as part of Season Fair’s Special Projects at Michigan Central, the work embodies reverence, erotic honesty, and radical acceptance, positioning queer embodiment as both sacred and transformative.
Through scale and materiality, Lion’s Roar, Lover’s Whisper becomes a site of ritual and intimacy. Each tile is a vessel of gesture and surface, grounding ephemeral presence into lasting form. By reclaiming erotic energy as sacred rather than scandalous, the installation exposes the tension between visibility and erasure while affirming queer eroticism as a force of vitality, resilience, and healing.
This new work extends the spirit of the Radical Presence series, which explores queer embodiment through clay, wood, and hybrid sculptural forms. Previous works such as the Radical Presence Tableware Series, Vase Series, and Figure Series have reframed everyday objects as sites of liberation, intimacy, and joy.
“Clay holds memory,” says Jim Schatz. “Each impression, each mark, is a record of being. In this installation, the body becomes both the subject and the altar—fired into permanence, unapologetically present.”
Exhibited in Detroit—a city known for resilience and reinvention—the installation honors clay as both archive and altar, a material capable of preserving not just form, but radical acceptance and healing.
