Figures of Presence Totems, 2026
Clay, wood, glaze
Unique
Created for Radical Presence, Figures of Presence Totems brings clay and wood into a charged, upright relation. These sculptural works join hand-formed ceramic elements with reclaimed wooden supports, allowing the body to emerge through fragment, gesture, and vertical structure. Part figure, part totem, part architectural presence, each work holds a tension between intimacy and monumentality.
Arms, torsos, curves, and abstracted bodily forms appear in partial view, embedded within or rising from the wood. The ceramic surfaces carry touch, contour, and vulnerability, while the wood introduces weight, endurance, and a sense of grounding. Together, the materials create figures that feel both ancient and immediate—assembled, weathered, protective, and alive.
Presented as part of Radical Presence, the totems extend the exhibition’s exploration of queer embodiment, ritual presence, and the body as both vessel and site. Each sculpture stands as an individual presence while also functioning as part of a larger conversation between structure and sensuality, support and exposure, permanence and fragility.
