22 Years of Making: A Note of Gratitude and Wonder
This year marks 22 years of J Schatz Studio, and we’ve been taking a quiet moment to reflect — not just on the work we’ve made, but on the life that has grown around it.
When we started, we were simply making objects we believed in. Forms that felt honest. Pieces meant to be held, used, lived with. We didn’t have a long-term plan so much as a deep curiosity — about material, process, and how handmade objects could quietly shape the spaces people call home.
Over the years, the studio has evolved in ways we couldn’t have predicted. We’ve moved cities. We’ve rebuilt studios. We’ve followed ideas that felt risky, slowed down when the world asked us to, and leaned into change when it felt necessary. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: the belief that making things matters.
Twenty-two years in, we still feel that same pull toward the clay — toward form, balance, surface, and light. We still believe that everyday objects can carry meaning. That beauty doesn’t have to shout. That something handmade can offer comfort, grounding, and even a little wonder in uncertain times.
This milestone isn’t just about longevity. It’s about community. About the collectors who’ve lived with our work for decades, the new faces discovering it for the first time, the shops and galleries who believed in us early on, and the friends, collaborators, and fellow makers who’ve inspired us along the way.
It’s also about resilience. Staying curious. Staying human. Continuing to make things by hand in a world that often asks us to move faster than feels right.
As we look ahead — with new lighting collections, new spaces, and new chapters unfolding — we feel deeply grateful. Grateful for the ability to do this work. Grateful for the trust you place in us when you bring one of our pieces into your home. Grateful that after 22 years, the studio still feels alive with possibility.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
Thank you for supporting handmade work.
Thank you for believing, as we do, that objects can carry care.
Here’s to the next chapter — and to continuing to make things that are meant to be lived with, loved, and quietly cherished.
With gratitude,
