Obsessed with the Orb - Feeling Like We are Just Getting Started
It's a balancing act, purely elliptical, harmonic, and cheerful. We started with concepts and designs that were orb inspired, created originals, created molds, caste and experimented with the shapes in stoneware, and followed inspiration from the fired work. It led us to finished work that went beyond our expectations. Follow our orb obsessed journey below and see how we created White Orb Sculpture, Multicolor Orb Sculpture, and Orb Table Lamps.
Our original molds arrive and we began casting shapes and experimenting with design ideas.
The orb shaped rings are round when they are caste and finished to our design specs. During the firing cycle when they reach their peak temperature of 2200 °F they settle into an imperfect ellipse.
After firing the orb shapes for the first time we experiment with glazing setup, design ideas, and different ways in which we can realize the original projects we had in mind when we started the process.
Glazing techniques evolve and our studio assistant Melinda develops a system ensuring perfection in the finished piece. After the second glaze firing these orbs will come out of the kiln with a mirror finish.
As orbs that were glazed and fired a second and final time come out of the kiln we begin experimenting in earnest with the final presentation and design of the finished piece in the studio. We use all areas of the studio to mockup our ideas. The completed White Orb Sculpture ends up in the center of the studio.
Inspired by our in house color palette we create a carefully color balanced sculpture using the color principles of Johannes Itten. The Multicolor Orb Sculpture is designed to be attached using stainless steel grommets and a stainless hanging cable.
Inspired by our need for a bedside table lamp we use the orb shapes to create the Orb Table Lamp and make sure they meet our needs. They are great for reading in bed and we create another larger version that is suited for a living space.
The final step in this process is presentation. Photographing the orb inspired products to ensure an accurate depiction is our goal.
