We Opened Take Me Home!

This week, we opened the preview exhibition for Take Me Home, and we are feeling deeply grateful.

What began as an idea, then a plan, then months of work, uncertainty, building, making, moving, and hoping, became real when people walked through the door. To see the space alive — with conversation, curiosity, warmth, and connection — meant everything to us.

Thank you to everyone who came to the opening, visited the exhibition, shared encouraging words, posted about the work, brought friends, and helped us mark this beginning. Thank you to everyone who has supported J Schatz Studio over the years and made it possible for us to imagine a space like this at all. And thank you to the people around us here in Detroit who helped make this first expression of Take Me Home possible.

Take Me Home begins with a simple belief: that the things we live with matter. That art, design, handmade objects, and the spaces we create around ourselves can hold memory, beauty, comfort, and love. We have wanted to make a place that feels personal and alive — a place where exhibition and everyday life meet, and where the objects we make and share can be experienced in a more intimate way.

The preview exhibition, Radical Presence, marks the beginning of that vision. It is only the first step, but an important one. Seeing the work in the space, and seeing people respond to it, gave us a powerful sense of what Take Me Home can become.

We are excited for what comes next.

We see a future here that includes exhibitions, new collections, special installations, collaborations, gatherings, and a growing world of objects and ideas shaped by the life we are building in Detroit. We want Take Me Home to continue unfolding as both a gallery and a shop — a place for handmade work, sculptural presence, and meaningful connection.

For now, we are simply grateful. Grateful to have opened the doors. Grateful to share this work. Grateful to begin.

This is only the beginning, and we’re so glad you’re here for it.
